Teresa Magbanua

TERESA MAGBANUA (1868 – 1947)

Teresa Magbanua was the Ilongga “Joan of Arc” against the Spaniards. She earned the distinction of being the only woman to lead combat troops in the Visayas against Spanish and American forces. When American victory in Panay was conceded in 1900, she refused to surrender; she simply disbanded her troops and retired to Sara, Iloilo.  Her Bas relief is by sculptor Victor Tabernilla.
